Whatappeals to you about owning a franchise?

Thisquestion is one you need to answer first.  Doyou expect to get rich quick and not work hard?  Gettingrich is not a guaranteeand most likely you will work hard.  However, you willsee the rewards from your business if you are willing to invest the time, energyand money to help it grow.

Ifthe phrase "the buck stops here" makes you nervous than you may not beprepared to own a business.  No one (not even the franchisor) cantell you all the right decisions to make for your business.  You need to beable to plan for yourself and respond to the needs of your business.

Thefirst few years of operating a new business can demand a hands-on approachwhich may mean long, hard hours.  It will not be easy street, at least notinitially.  It's very common to not make a lot of money. Beingnegative is not an option. Negative thinking feeds failure and interferes withyour ability to stay motivated. You have to be apositive person in order to succeed in business.

Are you a people person? 

Evenif you want to hire someone else to deal with the customer in the future,initially YOU will have to develop the reputation of your business.  If youmake people happy with your business, they will tell others.  You can'tescape dealing with the public.

Do you have to do things your own way allthe time?

Franchisingis successful because the franchisor is making or has made the mistakes for youand has developed a system that works.  You will need to follow some rulesas a franchisee.

Canyou cope with the many demands of operating a business?

Youhave to be willing to do everything from scheduling your own day to dealing withirate customers.

Doyou have the drive to go for it 100 % ?

Youwill need to believe in yourself, trust your judgment and be willing to learnfrom your mistakes. 

Some other tips whenchoosing the right franchise:

  • Make sure you choose what you love to do.  Can you see yourself doing that particular business for the next 5 to 10 years?

  • Look very closely at what is going to be demanded of you personally and make sure you are willing to give it. 

  • Insure success by giving to your community where your franchise is located. The more you can give, the better are your chances of succeeding.
